Garmin Increases inReach Subscription Fees, Introduces New Plans

Garmin inReach Subscription Fee Increase

Garmin has announced new pricing plans, introduced new features, and increased subscription fees and activation fees effective September 18.

New inReach Subscription Price

Previously, customers had to choose between annual contracts or month-to-month “Freedom” plans, with multiple tiers of service, including Safety, Recreation, and Expedition. Garmin has now streamlined these plans, consolidating them into three new month-to-month plans: Essential, Standard, and Premium. The changes come with a noticeable increase in fees. Below are the new prices;

Essential Plan

Text messages have been increased from 10 to 50 (per month). The essential plan now supports 10 photo/voice messages, which weren’t available before.

  • Retired Plan: $11.95 (Annual Contract) / $14.95 (Freedom Safety)
  • New Pricing: $14.99 (Essential)

Standard Plan

Text messages increased from 40 to 150 (per month). Also includes 25 photo/voice messages.

  • Retired Plan: $24.95 (Annual Recreation) / $34.95 (Freedom Recreation)
  • New Pricing: $29.99 (Standard)

Premium Plan

Includes sending 50 photo/voice messages.

  • Retired Plan: $49.95 (Annual Expedition) / $64.95 (Freedom Expedition)
  • New Pricing: $49.99 (Premium)

Additional Costs and Limitations

One major change that existing subscribers are not happy about is the removal of the option to suspend service. This means customers who cancel their service will need to pay the activation fee if they decide to reactivate in the future.

Garmin has also increased activation fees for new subscribers across all three plans. Additionally, any photo or voice message that exceeds the allocated limit will incur $1.

The pricing changes will not affect existing users until their next annual renewal date when they will be migrated into the equivalent of the new plans. Those who wish to change to new plans will not incur early cancellation fees.
